Part 1 – In the classroom ~ Bud Keyes ~ American Flow Control (WRWA Corporate Gold Member)
I. Proper operation of the Waterous Fire Hydrant
Proper opening procedures and direction. 17 turns to open
Proper closing procedures
II. Components of the Fire hydrant
Color, model of preference, operating nuts, upper rod, lower rod, support tube, support wheel, lower valve assembly, brake off barrel, drain tubes
III. Trouble shooting
1. Hard to operate hydrants. Common issues / solutions
2. Fire hydrant has a leak. Outside or inside the barrel? Common solutions
3. What if the operating nut is just spinning and the Hydrant cannot be opened or closed?

Part 2 – Out in the field ~ Bud Keyes ~ American Flow Control (WRWA Corporate Gold Member)
Work on a live hydrant. Demonstrate Maintenance, disassembly (discuss reasons why disassembly would be needed), assembly of fire hydrants, re-assemble – after the problem is diagnosed and repaired. Proper operation and maintenance of fire hydrants under pressure.
