Village of Baldwin is accepting applications for the position of Wastewater/Water Utility Assistant Operator

Salary:   $22.75-$32.35 hour.

JOB SUMMARY: The purpose of this job is to perform operations for wastewater plant, providing support for the Wastewater Operator.  All work is performed under the direction of the Wastewater Operator and/or Director of Public Works.  To perform these jobs successfully, the employee must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.  Additional certification is required.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES:  Employee is expected to learn the full scope of duties, which may include but is not limited to the following:

GENERAL PUBLIC WORKS DUTIES

  • Plow streets, remove snow piles and shovel sidewalks, as needed.
  • Perform a variety of daily maintenance, repairs and construction tasks in a safe and proper method.
  • Perform water and sewer maintenance including but not limited to repairs of water main breaks, sewer plant maintenance, change out meters, cross connection inspections, paint hydrants, flush hydrants etc.
  • Perform weekend duties at the sewer plant on a rotational basis.
  • Fix broken or bent water shut-offs.
  • Comfortably work near moving mechanical parts, work in high precarious places, and work in any outdoor weather conditions. The noise level of most operations is moderate.
  • Attend meetings and classes, as required.
  • Fill out proper paperwork, as needed.
  • Respond to public works emergency situations as directed.

WATER/WASTEWATER DUTIES

  • Perform additional water duties such as but not limited to taking water samples, well water readings, change well pumpage, well and water tower inspections, follow required well water testing standards for lead, copper, nitrates, etc.
  • Perform additional wastewater duties such as, but not limited to, lab procedures in biochemical oxygen demand and suspended solids, PH readings, oxygen readings in water, pump sludge, maintenance of pumps/machines and sludge thickener, take samples of fecal and phosphorus, ammonia testing, lift station maintenance, weekend duty, etc.
  • Submit daily reporting to the National Weather Service.
  • File proper paperwork and reports including but not limited to CMA Report, CCR Report, monthly DNR report etc.
  • Maintain all licensing and certifications.
  • Maintain and coordinate service and maintenance of sewer lift stations, pumps, and generators
  • Maintain and inspect collection system to ensure optimal performance of village storm and sanitary sewage systems.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS:  Some mechanical experience, ability to use common sense, ability to use a variety of equipment.  Read, analyze and follow all written and verbal orders. Ability to recognize and identify similarities or differences between characteristics of colors, shapes, and sounds associated with job related objects, materials and tasks.

Physical demands include but not limited to sitting, standing, walking, climbing, stooping, bending, twisting, reaching, seeing far and near, hearing, lifting, and carrying 75 pounds or less.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Two (2) years of full-time municipal public works experience.
  • Basic computer and math skills
  • Must be able to obtain a WI Municipal General Wastewater Operator certification within 12 months of employment.
  • Class B CDL license with air brake endorsement; must be able to obtain a Class A CDL license within the first 6 months of employment.
  • Must be able to work weekends on rotational basis.
  • Must be available to work over-time on an as-needed basis.
  • Must be self-motivated and willing to work.
  • Employee may be asked to train and maintain certification in full face SCBA (self-contained breathing apparatus).
  • Successfully pass a pre-employment drug/alcohol screening.

PREFERRED:

  • Possession of a 4-year bachelor’s degree in biology or related field
  • Prior work experience with water/wastewater operations.
