We are seeking qualified candidates for the position of Meter Service Technician within the Department of Public Works Water Utility Division. The position is under general supervision to perform all duties necessary for the installation and maintenance of water meter repair and testing; as well as related work required for the Water facility. Position is considered essential, and employee has opportunities to make a positive impact on the local community as well as a flexible working environment and future promotional opportunities in alignment with succession and career path.

Specific duties include: Installing residential, industrial, and commercial meters; Leak detection monitoring and investigations; Various facility inspections for cross connection-clear water compliance; Meter and Water service box maintenance; reading, testing, and repairing as required; Locating/documenting water service boxes; working directly with local utility contractors; Accurate Data Entry and Customer Service relations with Utility Customers; other duties and tasks as required including, cross-training within the utilities additional departments.

The position requires the employee to be frequently available for emergency response during off-shift hours as well as participating in the on-call rotation.
• Position would be involved in a rotating call-in list, with at least a 60% response rate for after hour water related emergencies.
• Position would be compensated for being designated on-call lead, for *5 weeks out of the year. Lead would respond to reported after hour calls, to identify issue and take necessary steps to resolve a water related emergency.
*Week allocation may change due to utility needs.

Qualifications and/or knowledge and willingness to learn of the following include:
• Materials, methods, techniques and equipment used in removing, repairing, installing and testing of meters
• General understanding of home plumbing and utility excavation
• Establish and maintain effective public relationships
• Hand tool and specialized meter equipment use
• Ability to utilize smart phone, tablet, and computer for scheduling and record keeping
• Possession of a valid Wisconsin Commercial “Class A” Driver’s License without air brakes restriction and with tanker endorsement or ability to obtain within 3 – 6 months of hire (City paid & provided training).

Desirable Training and Experience:
Previous experience in performing manual work of a semi-skilled nature or knowledge of water facilities; graduation from high school or equivalent; experience in handling the public with concerns in a professional, courteous, quick thinking, and responsive manner.

SALARY RANGE: We offer a competitive compensation package $24.02 – $27.45/hour ($30.41 – $37.27/hour with employer health benefits and WRS match) based upon knowledge, skills, and abilities with potential to receive additional step increases based on meeting and/or exceeding goals/expectations; annual COLA and step increases pending City Council approval of budgets; and future promotional opportunities in alignment with succession and career path.
