CITY OF BROOKFIELD ~ Maintenance Specialist (Wastewater Treatment Plant) (Shift schedule is Monday-Friday 6:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.)
PURPOSE: The position of Maintenance Specialist (Wastewater Treatment Plant) performs work with the installation, maintenance, and repair of buildings and grounds, including all equipment specific to the treatment of wastewater in the facility and collection system. Equipment includes mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, HVAC, plumbing, masonry, carpentry, emergency power generation/backup power units. The incumbent must have a safe working knowledge of all levels of electrical equipment and supply, and the knowledge and ability to repair and maintain specialized plant instrumentation, such as well communication devices and networks, SCADA systems, PLC’s, SCC’s and computer communication networks. This position performs skilled and manual labor. Reports for duty in emergency situations.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Maintenance Specialist II*:
- Executes repairs or replacement of equipment as identified by the Asset Maintenance Supervisor, Assistant Plant Manager, Plant Manager or maintenance program.
- Troubleshoots and repairs problems associated with mechanical equipment or electrical components or devices.
- Works independently or in concert to troubleshoot plant and lift station controls including reprogramming computer or communications software.
- Performs preventative maintenance on schedule.
- Responds to calls and performs emergency repairs. May be required for stand by duty on a rotating basis.
- Promotes and maintains positive relations with other City department staff and the community in general.
- Provides oversight on repairs, installation or minor improvement projects and provides technical expertise.
- Trains on the leadership of small teams and increases knowledge and abilities in the area of CMMS development and implementation.
- Maintains records of equipment repairs. Orders parts and maintains inventory, as required, in anticipation of equipment repairs.
Maintenance Specialist I*:
- Executes repairs or replacements of equipment as identified by the Asset Maintenance Supervisor, Assistant Plant Manager, Plant Manager or maintenance program.
- Troubleshoots, repairs and makes component or complete change out of equipment including HVAC and devices such as pumps, motors, couplers, etc.
- Troubleshoots and makes component replacements on plant SCADA system.
- Performs preventative maintenance on schedule.
- Works independently or in concert to troubleshoot plant and lift station controls including reprogramming computer or communications software.
- Ability to use shop equipment including welders, torches, drill press, grinders, hoist, etc.
- Assists operators with lift station equipment checks and repairs.
- May be required for emergency stand by duty on a rotating basis.
- Promotes and maintains positive relations with other City department staff and the community in general.
- Trains on high voltage electrical work, PLC programming SCADA and other more technical repairs and maintenance.
- Performs these tasks commensurate with skills, certifications and ability.
- Maintains records of equipment repairs. Orders parts and maintains inventory, as required, in anticipation of equipment repairs.
Maintenance Worker*:
- Executes equipment maintenance tasks identified by the Asset Maintenance Supervisor, Assistant Plant Manager, Plant Manager or maintenance program to accomplish weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual scheduled equipment maintenance items.
- Assists on the repair and replacement of WPCC equipment. This includes the ability to utilize shop equipment such as welders, torches, drill presses, grinders and hoists.
- Trains on the repair and replacement of WPCC equipment and controls and performs minor repairs and maintenance commensurate with knowledge and ability.
- Completes paperwork associated with scheduled maintenance work order tasks for re-entry into the maintenance computer program.
- Assists operators or the maintenance crew with plant or lift station equipment repairs.
- Reports for emergency call in wet weather pumping events. May be required for stand by duty on a rotating basis.

REQUIREMENTS:
Maintenance Specialist II*:
Knowledge equivalent to a high school diploma. Associates degree or equivalent in water, wastewater technologies or related technical field preferred.
Certification as a licensed Wastewater Operator by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is preferred.
A minimum of two (2) years of specialized or technical training or experience in electronic and electrical repair, gas and electrical utility supply including safe working
knowledge of high voltage electrical, full working knowledge of low voltage electrical, computer systems, and power generation.
A minimum of six (6) years experience in the repair and maintenance of mechanical equipment, HVAC, sour gas scrubbing and beneficial reuse and other wastewater treatment maintenance activities.
Knowledge and ability to operate lifting devices, torches, welders and other tools associated with repair work.
Knowledge of diagnostic testing equipment for instrumentation repair.
Knowledge and ability to operate motorized equipment, trucks and tools.
Ability to report to duty in emergency situations and be on call on a regular basis.
Maintenance Specialist I*:
Knowledge equivalent to a high school diploma.
A minimum of four (4) years’ experience in maintenance of mechanical equipment.
Knowledge and ability to operate lifting devices, torches, welders, and other tools associated with repair work.
Knowledge of diagnostic testing equipment for instrumentation repair.
Knowledge and ability to operate motorized equipment, trucks and tools.
Ability to report to duty in emergency situations and be on call on a regular basis.
Maintenance Worker*:
- Knowledge equivalent to a high school diploma.
- A minimum of two (2) years of specialized or technical training in equipment maintenance.
- Experience in maintenance of buildings and grounds.
- Ability to report to duty in emergency situations and be on call on a regular basis. (Equivalent combinations of training and experience may be considered.)
* The City has the right to fill the WPCC Maintenance Specialist position vacancy at either the I or II or Worker level based and knowledge, skills and abilities of the applicant.
SALARY RANGE: WPCC Maintenance Specialist II: (Pay Range 125) $35.44 – $40.50 per hour with excellent benefits.
WPCC Maintenance Specialist I: (Pay Range 124) $34.08 – $38.97 per hour with excellent benefits.
WPCC Maintenance Worker: (Pay Range 123) $32.76 – $37.46 per hour with excellent benefits. (Appointments are usually made at the beginning of the range).
