Wastewater Treatment Operator B

City of Columbus, WI (pop. 5,540) is seeking a Wastewater Treatment Operator B at Columbus Utilities, our municipally owned and operated electric and water utilities.

General Purpose: The Wastewater Treatment Operator B is responsible for process control, including troubleshooting, monitoring and operation of the wastewater treatment plant – including buildings and grounds, the sanitary sewer collection system and lift stations. Work involves a variety of maintenance duties in the sewer utility and in cooperation with other City departments.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Monitoring of control panels and adjusting valves and gates to regulate flow of wastewater
  • Observing variations in operating conditions (interprets meters, gauge readings and test results to determine processing requirements)
  • Collecting samples of raw, partially treated and treated wastewater, waste solids, and other by-products
  • Accurately perform laboratory analysis
  • Operating a variety of tools and equipment
  • Operation of sludge dewatering and sludge hauling equipment and support systems
  • Operation and maintenance of power generating equipment, and backup power sources
  • Maintains sewer lift stations
  • Performs Collection System Monitoring, Sampling, and Reporting
  • Maintenance of records
  • Preventative Maintenance and Corrective Maintenance of wastewater utility equipment
  • Maintenance of collection system, including citizen requests for assistance
  • Performance of various duties as assigned by WWTP Operator A, Operator B and/or Utilities Director – including duties related to:
  • professional development training
  • roadways
  • confined spaces
  • power/hand tools
  • laboratory
  • snow removal equipment
  • attends safety related schooling and workshops

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Wisconsin Driver’s license
  • Valid and maintained Wisconsin Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with Tanker and Air Brake endorsements or ability to obtain within 1 year.

Special Requirements

  • Desirable but not mandatory for consideration – Associates Degree in water/wastewater related field.
  • State of Wisconsin Wastewater Operators certification.
  • Must have willingness to obtain Licensing required by the State of Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources WPDES Operating Permit.
  • Any combination of education and experience which in the sole discretion of the Utility and City of Columbus would demonstrate the candidate’s ability to meet the required knowledge, skills, and abilities for the position may also be considered.
  • A 30-minute response time is required within 1 year of employment.
