Wastewater Treatment Specialist I

City of Fond du Lac is accepting applications for the position of Wastewater Treatment Specialist I.  This full-time position reports directly to the Assistant Superintendent and will perform technical, skilled, and manual work in controlling, monitoring and routinely maintaining all operational equipment at the Fond du Lac WTRRF under the standards set by the Wisconsin DNR and the Wastewater Superintendent to maintain operational performance in ensuring wastewater is properly treated to meet the limitations of the plant’s discharge permit.

Various duties include:  Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) – Monitor the main plant, storm, and sanitary stations, SCADA computer, and investigate alarm conditions in the plant to ensure that corrective actions are taken; Wastewater Treatment – Control, monitor, and operate plant equipment in each of the following areas: Preliminary Treatment, Primary Treatment, Secondary Treatment, Final Clarification, Effluent Disinfection, Chemical Treatment Systems; Solids Processing – Control, monitor and operate equipment in each of the following areas: High Strength Waste, Anaerobic Digesters, Dewatering, Polymer System; Side Stream Treatment – Control, monitor and operate plant equipment and biological activity of Side Stream Deammonification System; Methane and Renewable Gas Production Process – Control, monitor, and operate equipment in each of the following areas: H2S Removal System, Siloxane & Condensate Removal System, CAT Combined Heat and Power Generator, Boilers, and Waste Gas Burner; Data Analysis and Process Monitoring – Perform process related lab tests and probe maintenance in accordance with established procedures.  Have a basic understanding of DNR reportable lab procedures. Assist lab with composite sampling; Process Sampling – Perform process sampling collection in the following areas: Influent, Primary Effluent, Final Effluent, Biosolids, Biogas, Soil Sampling Farm Fields, Industrial Discharges, Lake & River, Watershed, and Outside Sewer Groups Flow. Sampling for process upsets and troubleshooting; Process Maintenance – Clean and perform preventative maintenance on process equipment. Directly assist Equipment & Collections Technicians with projects as needed.

Duties will also include on-call responsibilities and performing routine building, equipment, and grounds maintenance and cleaning work as required. Scheduled hours include rotating weekend work (5 hours on Saturday and Sunday) and rotating holidays.

Recommended requirements:  Graduation from a two-year specialized training program in wastewater treatment including laboratory procedures and an internship at a wastewater treatment facility or equivalent training or work experience.  Must possess a valid Wisconsin Driver’s License.

Possession of a valid Wisconsin “Advanced” wastewater operator certification in subclasses:  A1, B, C, D, L, N, P, and SS within 2 years of hire.

SALARY RANGE: We offer a competitive compensation package ($26.40 – $30.17/hour) based upon knowledge, skills, and abilities with potential to receive additional step increases based on meeting and/or exceeding goals/expectations; annual COLA and step increases pending City Council approval of budgets; and future promotional opportunities in alignment with succession and career path.
